What to expect
The Matterhorn Express gondola takes you from Zermatt to Schwarzsee at 2,583 m, a small lake with a white chapel at the very foot of the Matterhorn. The mountain's north and east faces rise straight above you, closer than from anywhere else you can reach by lift. Walk around the lake, start up the trail towards the Hörnli hut, or hike back down to Zermatt through Stafelalp and Zmutt.
